How to Lower Blood Sugar Without Giving Up Your Favorite Foods: 5 Ways

blood sugar type 2 diabetes Oct 05, 2026

How great would it be to get your blood sugar normal, and keep it there, without giving up the foods you love?

Most advice about blood sugar is about what to cut out. That matters. But there's another side that hardly anyone talks about: how much sugar your body burns.

Your blood sugar depends on how much sugar you eat, how fast it gets absorbed, how much your liver makes, and how much you burn. Today, let's focus on burning more.

Where your energy goes

When sugar is available, your body uses it first. It's the easiest fuel. Here is roughly where your energy goes each day:

  • About 60% keeps you alive: your heart, lungs, brain and organs, even while you sleep.
  • About 30% powers movement, mostly through your muscles.
  • About 10% breaks down the food you eat.

Each of the 5 ways below turns up one of these.

1️⃣ Build and keep your muscle

Muscles are full of tiny powerhouses called mitochondria. Those powerhouses need fuel all day long, even while you sleep. So the more muscle you have, the more sugar you burn at rest.

Here's the catch. We naturally lose muscle as we get older, unless we work to keep it. You don't need to become a bodybuilder. Lifting weights or using resistance bands a few times a week helps you hold on to the muscle you have.

2️⃣ Move more through the day

Having muscle is step one. Using it is step two.

So many of us sit for hours at a time. I've caught myself doing it too! Working muscles pull sugar right out of your blood. So get up once an hour. Walk around, or do a few squats at your desk. Set an alarm to remind you.

3️⃣ Turn on your internal furnace: brown fat

You've heard of regular "white" fat. Its job is to store energy. But there's another kind called brown fat. Brown fat burns energy to make heat and keep you warm.

Babies have lots of brown fat. Adults have much less. But cold exposure can help the body make more of it. That's why you see people taking cold plunges.

Brown fat is packed with those same powerhouses, the mitochondria. So it burns sugar, and it can even burn energy stored in white fat. Win, win!

If you have heart problems, check with your doctor before trying cold exposure.

4️⃣ Eat more protein

Your body uses energy just to break down food, and protein takes the most. About 20 to 30% of the calories in protein are burned just digesting it. Carbs take about 5 to 10%, and fat takes very little.

This one is a small boost, but it adds up. And protein keeps you full longer, too.

5️⃣ Protect your organs

Your liver, kidneys and heart are also full of mitochondria. Healthy organs burn a lot of energy, all day long.

When organs are damaged, from cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease or a heart attack, you lose tissue that burns sugar. So caring for your whole body is also caring for your blood sugar.

Bottomline?

  1. Build and keep muscle
  2. Move more
  3. Activate brown fat
  4. Eat more protein
  5. Protect your organs

You don't have to give up every food you love to have normal blood sugar. Pick one of these and start today. Your muscles are a great place to begin.
